SHADES OF AN AFRICAN HERITAGE
The green and white of the Nigerian flag are featured throughout the design. Green represents Nigeria’s agricultural heritage and white is a symbol of peace and unity. This makes vivid reference to the country in which artist Ejiwa “Edge” Ebenebe grew up.
PATTERNS OF THE CALABASH
A calabash is crafted from a dried, hollowed-out gourd into which patterns are hand-carved. They are used many ways in Nigerian village homes, from cooking utensils to storage. Waving grass, cowrie shells and shining stars make up the patterns, reflecting the environment and memories of the calabash’s creator.
GOLDEN WARMTH
Edge has used gold to symbolize the vibrant sun of Nigeria and Samoa, another land of her upbringing. Gold is also a nod to Nigeria’s national flower, the Yellow Trumpet.
